Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at Oscars Over Joke About Jada Pinkett-Smith: What appeared to be a peaceful evening at the Oscars turned out to be one of the greatest unscripted moments in television history. Comedian Chris Rock took the stage at one point to give a few jokes.
He began by discussing Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz and then moved on to Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith. He made fun of the actress’s bald head by asking when the G.I. Jane sequel will be released.
Everything looked to be going swimmingly until the cameras caught a glimpse of Will Smith approaching Rock on the stage. He abruptly smacked the comic and returned to his seat.
Rock, like the rest of us, was taken aback and tried to get Will to relax, but Smith was having none of it.
“It was just a G.I. Jane joke guy,” Rock said. Will, on the other hand, continued saying, “Keep my wife’s name out of your fucking lips.” What they saw at the Dolby Theatre stunned the whole audience.
Watch: Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at Oscars
After Rock took the stage to give the award, the entire crowd began to discuss what had just occurred. The first instinct was to wonder whether it was staged, but the moment appeared to be genuine.
But there has to be more to what transpired in one of the most bizarre Oscar moments ever.
What’s the story behind Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair?
What actually transpired was far more severe than everyone imagined; Will Smith merely chose to defend his wife during a tough time.
The actress has spoken up about a problem that causes her to lose her hair. Chris Rock was obviously unaware of this, and he received a smack from Will Smith as a result.
Although humor should never be judged, certain performers will be confronted with reality from time to time. With so many roasts under his belt, there’s no way Chris Rock could have predicted Will Smith would be the one who whacked him for talking too much.
If that wasn’t bad enough, Smith went on to win the Oscar for Best Actor and apologized for what everyone had just witnessed.
