What you need to know about Male Genital Warts
Hirsuties papillaris genitalis (Pearly penile papules) Pearly penile papules, also known as genital warts or hirsutoid papillomas, are small, skin-colored bumps that form around the head of the penis.
A papule is a raised, pimple-like growth on the skin that does not produce pus.
While these tiny bumps may seem alarming, they are harmless and will tend to fade in appearance as you age.
It may also be known as.. papillomatosis corona
Pathophysiology of PPP
The exact role of pearly penile papules is not clear to date.
They might be vestigial of penile snipes, which are seen in primates and other mammals and may promote sexual pleasure.
Causes /Etiology
Penile papules are a normal anatomic variant. They are not due to sexual activity or lack of hygiene. They are not infectious or contagious, unlike genital warts. They are not malignant or pre-malignant.
The real causes are unknown
Clinical presentation
Upon physical examination, pearly penile papules appear as one or several rows of small, flesh-colored, smooth, dome-topped filiform papules situated circumferentially around the corona or sulcus of the glans penis.
Uncommonly, lesions may extend onto the glans penis.
Its painless but vigorous sexual activity make causes bruises and may bleed.
Differential diagnosis
- Genital warts
- Molluscum contagiosum
- lichen nitidus
- Sebaceous hyperplasia of the penis.
Epidemiology
The prevalence of penile pearly papules is diversely appreciated and ranges from 14% to 48% of males.
They are rarely observed in children and mainly seen in late adolescence and early adulthood.
Their prevalence declines in older patients as the lesions involute with aging.
Similar papules have never been described on female genitalia
Diagnosis of PPP
The diagnosis can usually be made simply by examining their appearance.
It shouldn’t be difficult to distinguish pearly penile papules from other skin conditions, such as viral warts.
If there is any concern that the bumps may be a threat, some tissue can be biopsied to confirm a diagnosis
Prevention of PPP
There is no way to prevent pearly penile papules.
They are not brought on by any lifestyle choices you make.
Though they are more common among men who aren’t circumcised, there is no guarantee that circumcision will prevent the bumps from appearing one day
Treatment of PPP
