The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) took stringent measures following the discovery of academic misconduct during the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE). The examination body withheld results, canceled subject outcomes, and initiated investigations into suspected offenses.
They identified 235 schools whose candidates employed artificial intelligence-generated answers during the WASSCE. The affected subject results for these candidates have been withheld pending further investigations.
WAEC cancelled exam results for 3,647 candidates found with foreign materials and 839 with mobile phones, citing a strict prohibition on mobile device possession for a fair examination environment. They also withheld the results of 4,280 candidates and 1,005 for suspected offenses, ensuring the credibility of educational assessments in the West African region.
Decisions Concerning the WASSCE 2023 Withheld Results
WAEC is conducting thorough investigations to determine the nature and extent of these offenses. The body promises to issue final determinations on withheld results after investigations are completed, so we’ll keep you updated when there is any recent communication.
