UTAG strike has been called off indefinitely: The UTAG National Executive Committee conducted an emergency meeting on Tuesday, March 8th, 2022, to discuss the results of the referenda on its decision to temporarily stop the industrial action that began on January 10th, 2022.
You may recall that on Monday, February 21, 2022, the UTAG NEC agreed to temporarily pause the strike to allow for discussions with the Employer to help satisfy some of the demands and address UTAG’s concerns.
In the subsequent referenda, twelve (12) of the fifteen (15) UTAG branches voted to reject the call for the strike to be suspended, indicating their lack of faith in the Employer’s commitment to addressing their concerns and, as a result, their determination to continue the strike until their demands were met.
The UTAG NEC heard reports from the different branches about the branch meetings held on Friday, March 4, 2022, during the meeting.
The reports often focused on members’ discontent with the mechanisms put in place to satisfy their concerns. In this regard, the UTAG NEC will make every effort to ensure that all member concerns are reflected in any agreement reached between the Employer and UTAG.
Despite the objections highlighted, members accepted the plans after considering the contributions of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Education and notable individuals, which resulted in the temporary suspension of the strike action.
