UTAG agrees to call off strike as NLC and Employment Ministry move to discontinue legal process
Following an emergency meeting with the National Labour Commission and the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations, the University Teachers Association (UTAG) has agreed to call off their strike.
The government and UTAG have agreed to this in a memorandum of understanding.
UTAG and government have signed an MOU in which the NLC is expected to discontinue all legal processes against UTAG whiles UTAG also takes steps to suspend the ongoing strike action. Both parties agree to go back to the negotiation table on August 23, 2021.
The Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations also decided, in collaboration with the National Labour Commission, to end all legal proceedings against the striking academics.
The injunction was obtained by the National Labour Commission, which argued that the law prohibits UTAG from taking industrial action while discussions are in progress.
UTAG is pushing for the introduction of a 2012 Single Spine package that would pay entry-level professors $2,084 per year.
