John Boadu, the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), claims that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has a history of supporting LGBTQI+ rights.
According to him, the NPP has a legacy of opposing homosexual and lesbian practices, stating that the government will not support lesbians, bisexuals, gays, transgender, queer, and intersex (LGBTQ+) activities in Ghana.
“We, the NPP, are a Center-Right political party with definite values. He stated, “We believe in the family structure, in chieftaincy, and in the safeguarding of human rights.”
Mr Boadu questioned why some Ghanaians are asking the NPP to comment on the debate surrounding a bill currently before parliament that seeks to criminalize LGBTQ+ activities in the country.
“So don’t ask us if we welcome LGBTQI or not; that’s a question we’re not intended to be asked.” Mr Boadu reiterated on Sunday, October 17 that “the correct individuals to ask that issue are NDC members since they are a Center-Left political party.”
“All over the globe, center-left political parties encourage such practices when they get to power; in the United States, when they come to power, they advocate similar practices.” So let’s not waste our time talking about it. This practice will not be tolerated, and we will not accept it.”
He made the remarks while speaking to party supporters during the party’s Eastern Regional Delegates Conference.
The Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, introduced by eight MPs, aims to put a stop to the practice.
