There is consistent decline in unemployment rate – John Kumah
The government’s efforts, according to the Deputy Minister of Finance, have resulted in a decrease in the country’s unemployment rate.
On Thursday, Mr. John Kumah told George Wiafe, host of PM Express Business Edition, that the World Bank and other respected international agencies had put Ghana’s unemployment rate at 7.2 percent.
“It’s not zero, but we’ve got the numbers.” From 15.5 percent to around 7.2 percent. Check data from the World Bank or from anywhere you wish to check data. Ghana’s unemployment rate has been steadily declining since 2017,” he added.
Despite the achievement, the Deputy Finance Minister acknowledged that young employment remained a problem that the government is working hard to solve.
On JoyNews, he stated, “We still have a significant percentage of youth unemployment in the country.”
Despite the fact that the canker still exists, Mr Kumah stated that the government has attempted to shift the narrative via a number of initiatives.
“It used to be 48% (youth unemployment) in 2017.” Many young individuals were seeking for work, according to the World Bank. The World Bank’s most recent result for 2020 was 12.8 percent.
“We undertook NABCO, which got around 100,000 people off the street, and we conducted Planting for Food and Jobs, which resulted in millions of private-sector jobs being generated. We completed the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Program, which resulted in the creation of about 100,000 employment. What does it tell you now that the country’s young unemployment rate is at 12%? You had a 48% problem, so what does it tell you now that the country’s youth unemployment rate is at 12%? It tells you that you have lessened but not eliminated the problem.”
Mr Kumah also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to empowering the private sector’s youth, saying, “We will continue to open up the economy and provide more economic possibilities for young people.”
However, it is true that unemployment is decreasing.”
Meanwhile, the administration claims to have a thorough plan in place to generate a million jobs for young people in the next two and a half years.
Mr. John Kumah maintains that “President Akufo-government Addo’s has the clarity of what it wants to achieve when it comes to job creation,” despite the fact that many have questioned the government’s capacity to keep this promise.
Mr Kumah continued, “All of his (President Akufo- Addo’s) initiatives demonstrate that we are making an effect and doing more.”
