‘Squid Game’ Season 2 Confirmed By Director Hwang Dong-Hyuk
In an interview with the Associated Press, writer/director Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed that Netflix’s chaotic megahit, Squid Game, will return for season 2.
While Hwang Dong-hyuk has hinted at possible Squid Game season 2 concepts, this is the first time he has stated that it would be produced. The following is a translation of what he stated in the Associated Press interview, which you can see below:
Squid Game Season 2: Spoiler Alert
“There’s been a lot of pressure, a lot of demand, and a lot of love for a second season. So it’s almost as if you don’t give us an option! However, I can confirm that there will be a second season. I’m thinking about that right now. Currently, I’m working on a plan. However, I believe it is too early to predict when and how this will occur. So I’ll make a pledge to you… Gi-Hun will return, and he will accomplish something good for the planet.”
Hwang Dong-hyuk has already mentioned the possibility of a second season. Here’s what he had to say about the idea before, when he stated that he would want assistance this time, despite the fact that he previously wrote and directed every episode of Squid Game himself:
“For ‘Squid Game 2,’ I don’t have any solid plans.” Just thinking about it is exhausting. However, if I were to do it, I would not do it alone. I’d want to use a writers’ room and have several skilled directors.”
“One would be the narrative of the Frontman [a former officer who now controls the game] if I do get to make one.” I believe that the problem with police personnel is not unique to Korea. I saw it on the news throughout the world. This was something I wanted to bring up. Maybe in season two, I’ll be able to expand on this.”
Hwang Dong-hyuk has previously stated that Squid Game has not made him as wealthy as the show’s VIPs, owing to the fact that his initial Netflix contract did not include a performance incentive. But, given the series’ massive success, which has seen it become more popular than any other Netflix original in history, there’s little doubt he’ll be able to negotiate a generous package to return and make season 2, even if that wasn’t the original plan, and he’ll have to start from scratch with his ideas.

This is also the first official confirmation Gi Hun’s comeback which is a spoiler in and of itself, but if you saw the show’s conclusion, you’ll know that he’d be a character with a presence in the second season, even if there was a new game going on that he wasn’t playing in. The Frontman (and perhaps his brother?) are also expected to return.
Given that he’s still conceiving the season, I’d anticipate it to take more than a year to obtain Squid Game season 2. So, how long will it take? Is it really been that long? I wouldn’t rule it out, but it’ll be significant whenever it happens.
