School of Public Health has been renamed after Prof Binka: The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) Governing Council and Management have named the School of Public Health, Hohoe Campus in the Volta Region, after Professor Fred Newton Binka.
School of Public Health’s new name
Professor Fred Newton Binka School of Public Health is the new name for the school.
“Professor Binka, who was the Foundation Vice-Chancellor of the University and Chief Executive Officer, accomplished his mission throughout the most challenging time of the University,” according to a report from UHAS’ Public Affairs Directorate.
Prof Binka, an epidemiologist, collaborated closely with the Governing Council to create incubator facilities at Trafalgar, Hohoe, and the Sokode Main Campus.
Five schools were founded during his tenure: Allied Health Sciences, Basic and Biomedical Sciences, Nursing and Midwifery, Medicine, and Public Health.
Since his retirement, he has devoted his time to helping the School build graduate programs.
The School of Public Health is housed on the Hohoe Campus, with incubation space provided by the old Hohoe Municipal Hospital’s Onchocerciasis Chemotherapy Research Centre.
It is intended to bring creativity and vision to education and training in order to generate learners who are ‘health systems’ ready, service-oriented, and committed to achieving universal health coverage for Ghanaians.
Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Department of Family and Community Health, Department of Health Policy, Planning and Management, and Department of Population and Behavioural Sciences are the four departments that make up the School.
