“I assure them that there are long-term plans for the allowance increase, and as it was this President that raised the amount to GH 559, I have hope that he would do the same again very soon,” he stated.
The Ghana National Service Scheme’s (General Services) Deputy Executive Director, Gifty Oware-Aboagye, also stated that the national service allowance increase has been accepted by the central government.
“As NSS employees are paid from government funds, we intend to raise their allowance in the upcoming year”, according to Gifty.
The NSS representative continued, “They receive monthly allowances set by the Finance Ministry. The day that a person is paid is the day that they report for work at their assigned post. Over the entire service year, the allowance is paid.”
The National Union of Ghana Students(NUGS) requested an increment in the allowance at a meeting with President Nana Akufo-Addo, emphasizing the increased cost of transportation and other expenditures for potential national service members.
The leadership of the Union has asked that the national service allowance be raised from the present amount of GH559 to GH800 in the upcoming academic year as a result of the country’s escalating economic problems.
