MoE suggests teacher education: According to the Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the government is considering introducing entrance exams as a component of the admissions process for teacher education.
The education minister announced the formation of a seven-person committee with John Ntim Fordjour, the deputy minister for education, as its chairperson to examine the selection of WASSCE graduates for teacher training programs.
According to the National Teaching Council, an entrance exam will be implemented for WASSCE graduates who wish to enroll in one of the 46 public colleges of education to pursue a variety of teacher education programs.
At a stakeholders’ conference on the reform of the administration of the teacher licensure test, NTC Registrar Addai Poku stated that the test called the Ghana Basic Education Skills Examination Test (GBEST), would examine students’ numeracy and literacy.
Undergrads who pass the Ghana Basic Education Skills Examination Test (GBEST) would be admitted to study for a teaching degree in public colleges of education (CoE), he added.
So, he explained, “The GBEST will be utilized as the entry evaluation for the prospective teachers, and after completion, the students will be required to pass a level and subject-based licensure examination to be qualified as professional teachers.”

The new entrance examinations, according to Dr. Addai, are a component of reforms his organization is putting up to standardize teacher education admissions nationwide and enhance teacher preparation as part of educational reforms, the adjustments are intended to make sure that potential students who apply to be trained as teachers have the prerequisite credentials and character traits.
