Manchester City beat Chelsea: In the third round of the Carabao Cup at the Etihad Stadium, Manchester City defeated Chelsea 2-0 thanks to goals from Riyad Mahrez and Julian Alvarez.
The first half of the game was quite evenly matched, with City controlling much of the possession and Chelsea producing a few threatening breakaway opportunities. Teenager Lewis Hall and US international Christian Pulisic both had excellent scoring chances, but the first half finished scoreless.
After Edouard Mendy prevented Riyad Mahrez’s attempt from breaking the deadlock with a free kick, Julian Alvarez extended the advantage for the home team by slotting away the loose ball.
In the second half, City put more pressure on Chelsea, finally scoring in the 53rd minute when Mahrez curled an inch-perfect free kick over Chelsea’s defense and into the goal.
Five minutes later, Alvarez increased the advantage of the hosts by tapping in a rebound from another Mahrez attempt.

A comedy of mistakes in the City box led to Chelsea having a goal disallowed in the dying seconds.
Christian Pulisic’s effort was deflected into his own net by former Chelsea defender Nathan Ake, but Pulisic was offside after Ortega mishandled a cross and Sergio Gomez headed against his own bar.
