Earlier, the United States defeated Panama 5-1 at home in Orlando, with captain Pulisic scoring a hat-trick. Costa Rica needed to beat the United States by six goals or more in San Jose in order to qualify for the World Cup.
Juan Vargas and Anthony Contreras scored two goals in eight minutes in the second half to raise expectations of a miracle. The US, on the other hand, regrouped to finish the game and qualify for Qatar 2022 based on goal differential. The goalie mishandled a free-kick aimed at him, allowing the team to gain control in a hazardous location. Contreras bundled in the finish from close range after Jewison Bennette put in a low cross. Costa Rica had one more shot on goal, but they were unable to break through against a determined USA defense.
