Ghana receives 249,600 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine from the United Kingdom government.
The government has received 249,600 doses of the COVID-19 AstraZeneca vaccine, which was given under the COVAX program.
The United Kingdom government supplied the double-schedule vaccinations given by COVAX.
The total amount of vaccinations imported into the country now stands at 1,765,050, with 1,566,450 being AstraZeneca double-schedule vaccines.
Ms Tina Mensah, a Deputy Minister of Health, said the vaccinations arrived at the Kotoka International Airport in Accra at exactly 6:30 a.m. on board a Qatar Airline on Wednesday, August 18, at a key moment in the national COVID-19 immunization drive.
She described the gift as “another example of the UK government’s cooperation with the rest of the world,” of which Ghana is a part.
She thanked the UK government, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the World Health Organization (WHO), and other partners for their ongoing assistance in managing COVID-19 in the nation.
“Ghana is getting 249,600 AstraZeneca vaccinations from the UK government through the COVAX facility this morning to continue our COVID-19 vaccination,” says the statement. Mr. Boris Johnson, the UK Prime Minister, made the gift as part of a larger promise made during the G7 conference in June of this year.
Ms Mensah expressed her delight at the UK government’s continued support for the country’s health sector.
She noted that the donation came at a time when the government had committed a significant amount of resources, thanks to the efforts of Minister of Health Mr Kwaku Agyeman-Manu, to aid in the management of the COVID-19 pandemic while also addressing the general health needs of the entire population.
Dr. Joseph Whittle, the UK High Commission’s Charge D’Affaires and Acting High Commissioner, said it was a pleasure to hand over vaccines to Ghana on behalf of the UK government through COVAX, just six months after Ghana became one of the first African countries to receive vaccines through the COVAX initiative.
