Ghana Premier League Cash Prize Increased: Mr. Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), recently disclosed plans to increase the cash prize for the Ghana Premier League champions in the forthcoming 2023–2024 league season.
This declaration was given on August 29, 2023, at the Eastern Premier Hotel in Koforidua, Eastern Region, during the new league campaign’s kickoff event.
A prize of GH300,000 was awarded to Medeama Sports Club for winning the championship the previous season; this sum caused outrage in the football community. The amount was viewed by many as insufficient and unfair to Ghana’s world-class team.
According to Mr. Okraku’s most recent announcement, the league champion in 2023/24 would now earn a prize of GH 500,000 in addition to a trophy and 40 medals.
His goal is to increase the league’s spirit of competition in the upcoming season.
The second-place team will receive GH200,000, and the third-place team will receive GH100,000. The changes for this season, per Mr. Okraku, also include monetary prizes for the clubs that finish the season in the fourth through tenth places.
In previous occurrences, Accra Hearts of Oak won a prize worth GH 250,000 for their triumph in the 2020–21 campaign. Kumasi Asante Kotoko then received the same amount for finishing first the following season.
A slight improvement was shown in the previous campaign, when Medeama SC won the championship and received a prize of GH $300,000 for their outstanding performance.
As in the 2024–25 season, clubs that compete in the CAF Interclub competitions will receive preferential support, according to President Simeon-Okraku.
