According to official data from the Ghana Health Service (GHS), 396,759 Ghanaians have received both doses of the AstraZeneca Coronavirus vaccine.
Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, presented the numbers on Sunday in Accra, representing 1.3 percent of Ghana’s 30 million people.
He also revealed that the government has delivered a total of 1,261,677 doses of the vaccine as of 6.30 p.m. on June 30, 2021.
In addition, the amount falls short of an earlier goal of procuring 17.6 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine by the end of June 2021.
There are presently 1,619 ongoing COVID-19 cases in the country, with an average daily case count of around 80 cases.
Vaccine difficulties
The newest news comes amid rising fears that supply constraints are delaying the implementation of immunization programs in several African countries.
The Serum Institute of India provided AstraZeneca vaccines to the majority of African nations as part of the global vaccine sharing initiative COVAX. However, because to an increase in COVID-19 cases in India, vaccine exports were suspended.
The WHO and other international organizations hope to deliver 600 million doses of COVAX to Africa, enough to vaccinate at least 20% of the population.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a substantial number of nations that rely on the COVAX vaccine are running out of doses.
The United Nations and the Africa Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have previously asked nations with excess supplies to donate them to areas of Africa in need.
Vaccines are being distributed across Africa.
According to the John Hopkins University COVID-19 vaccination site, Morocco has the greatest percentage of completely vaccinated people in Africa, with 9.1 million (25.1%) of the population receiving both vaccines (from a total of 19.2million doses).
Tunisia and Botswana have also fully vaccinated 553,795 (4.7%) and 91,482 (4%) of their populations, respectively.
Mali, Togo, and Nigeria, Ghana’s West African neighbors, have completely vaccinated 46,317, 76,462, and 1,155,890 people, respectively.
