Ghana Card to be used for international travels soon – according to the NIA boss
Professor Kenneth Attafuah, Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority (NIA), has characterized the Ghana Card as a strong instrument that can be used for everything, including travel inside the country and abroad.
Ghanaians will soon utilize the Ghana Card as their passports for West African and international journeys, according to Professor Attafuah.
He pointed out that the Ghana Card already includes an electronic passport that is eligible for travel throughout West Africa.
He stated that this new development has been discussed with the Foreign Affairs Ministry and the National Information Technology Agency (NITA).
“We had a lovely meeting with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday,” Professor Attafuah remarked. We’re discussing the options for doing two tasks… One is the passport onboarding process, data integration with the passport office, and even how to travel with the Ghana Card. I mentioned that the Ghana Card is a useful tool because it includes an electronic passport that is valid for travel throughout West Africa.”
“The dialogue we had with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and NITA was to acquire the proper certification and certification from the International Standardisation Organization and the International Civil Aviation Organization.”
The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has certified the Ghana Card as a legitimate passport for travel to Europe and the Americas.”
Meanwhile, once this wish comes true, the National Identification Authority would register Ghanaians residing abroad for the Ghana Card.
On Monday, July 12, 2021, he said this on Asaase Breakfast Show.
This follows the successful merging of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) database with the National Identification Authority (NIA) on June 28, 2021.
