Chelsea offered a chance to sign Koulibaly: Chelsea has been offered a deal to sign Napoli star Kalidou Koulibaly in the upcoming summer transfer window, according to Area Napoli (h/t Football.London).
The 30-year-old is one of Italy’s top defenders and has been a pillar of the Gli Azzurri’s defense for the better part of a decade. He is approaching the conclusion of his playing career at the age of 30, but he still has a few years left at the top.
Thiago Silva has demonstrated that age is nothing more than a number as long as you adapt to the game and play to your abilities. It remains to be seen if Koulibaly will choose to follow that path.
Is there a new Chelsea defensive stalwart on the horizon?
Koulibaly had a disappointing 2020/21 season, which was marred by injury. He has since resurfaced, assisting Napoli in qualifying for the UEFA Champions League in 2022/23. He still has a lot of football left in him, and a manager with Thomas Tuchel’s skills can extract every last drop.
The specifics of the proposal to Chelsea are still unknown. However, it will be surprising if Napoli allows its great defender to leave on the cheap. Any transaction will also have to wait due to Chelsea’s present position.
Chelsea will likely have to overhaul their defensive line this summer. Antonio Rudiger is expected to join Real Madrid, while Andreas Christensen and Cesar Azpilicueta are also expected to leave. This means the club will be low on experienced defenders, particularly center-backs.
Chelsea has a monster of a defender in Koulibaly, and bringing in both quality and quantity is crucial. On his day, the Senegalese international is a force to be reckoned with, and he might very well be the pivot around which the Blues’ backline can be restructured. It remains to be seen whether or if this occurs.

Any effort to recruit Koulibaly will only be a temporary fix for Chelsea’s difficulties. They’d be better off seeking younger replacements who can help the team for many years. It remains to be seen if we will get the opportunity to do so throughout the summer.
Trevoh Chalobah is one of our own, and he always performs admirably when called upon. But he alone cannot manage the responsibility of anchoring our defense if some of our stalwarts go in the near future.
When Maurizio Sarri brought Jorginho to Stamford Bridge, he arrived from the same club, while Tiemoue Bakayako and Nathaniel Chalobah spent time on loan at Naples, implying that the two clubs have had a channel of contact in recent years when it comes to transferring dealings.
