1D1F: Akufo-Addo commissions GHC10 million yam and cassava processing factory in Oti
On September 9, 2021, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo commissioned CH Global Ltd, a cassava and yam processing plant in Addo Nkwanta, Krachi East District, Oti Region, as part of the government’s One District, One Factory (1D1F) initiative.
The factory will turn yam into frozen chips and yam balls under the brand name CH Foods, thanks to a GHC10 million loan from Ghana EXIM Bank. Raw materials accessible in the catchment region will be used in the operation.
The initial phase of the project is expected to process 120 yam tubers each hour on average, yielding 60 bags of processed frozen yam chips and yam balls.
Phase two of the project, which is set to begin in 2022, will include the installation of a cassava processing plant that will produce cassava fries and snacks with a capacity of 700 metric tonnes of cassava per year.
The plant would employ around 250 people in phase one, according to the company promoters who spoke to President Akufo-Addo. A substantial number of direct and indirect job opportunities for young people in and around the area will be created as part of the phase two development.
The president finished his speech by thanking the local promoters and traditional authorities for their unwavering support for the project, as well as Ghana EXIM Bank for providing the credit facility to build the state-of-the-art plant in Addo Nkwanta, Oti Region’s Krachi East District.
As of September 2021, the 1D1F program had 278 projects in various levels of execution around the country. 104 are presently operational, 150 are under construction, and the other 24 are in the process of being mobilized.
With unemployment as one of the country’s most pressing issues, the 1D1F project aims to alleviate young unemployment as well as underdevelopment in peri-urban and rural areas by encouraging private sector investment into development initiatives carried out by these communities.
1D1F’s justification
The One District, One Factory initiative aims to change Ghana’s industrial environment by empowering local businesses to create high-quality goods for both domestic and international markets.
The development of CH Global in Addo Nkwanta demonstrates the government’s commitment to the 1D1F program, which aims to assist the private sector.
